부처님은 과거세부터 수많은 생애를 거치며 끝없이 쌓아
온 무수한 선근과 공덕으로 500생을 살아왔다네
수행자로서 거부장자로서 때로는 사슴, 코끼리, 원숭이,
공작, 말, 호랑이와 같은 몸을 가지며 끝없이 윤회하였다네
그 생애 속에서 자기를 아끼지 않는 선행과 덕행으로
숭고한 보살행을 하였으며 구도를 향한 서원으로
말미암아 카필라 국 정반왕의 왕자로 태어나
해탈의 깨달음을 얻었다네
이 아름답고 성스러운 전생이야기는 자타카라는 경전
이름으로 후세에 수많은 제자들에게 깨달음에 이르는
지혜를 심어주었다네.

Jataka Buddha’s Previous Lives
Buddha had lived 500 lives since long time ago with innumerable merits and virtues stored through his lives/He had been reborn into lots of bodies of beings like an ascetic, a Srestha(president of a guild), a deer, am elephant, a monkey, a peacock, a horse and a tiger./ He had been doing good things as a bodhisattva in those lives, never taking care of himself. With these merits and virtues and with a great vow for enlightenment he had been born as the son of King Suddhodana in the Kingdom of kapilavastu and at last attained Nirvama./ These beautiful holy stories of his previous exitence called a sutra named Jataka have brough wisdom to enlightenment to numerous disciples who have been following after him through ages./
