우리는 괴로운 일을 당해 어두운 표정을 짓고 다니는 분들을 보면 간혹 이런 말을 해 드립니다. 얼굴 좀 펴고 다녀라, 또는 좀 웃고 다녀라, 그래 가지고 복이 들어 오겠니?

얼핏 들으면 이 말이 맞는 것 같습니다. 하지만 조금만 깊이 생각해 보면 그렇지 않음을 알 게 됩니다.

물론 웃음이란 본질적으로 즐거울 때 주로 나오는 것이라 어렵고 힘들 때 웃음을 짓기란 쉽지 않은 것이 사실입니다. 그러나 우리는 힘들고 어려울 때일수록 더욱더 웃고 마음에 환한 웃음을 지녀야만 합니다. 그것은 어둠은 어둠으로 사라지지 않기 때문입니다.

사업이 잘 되고 만사가 내 뜻대로 될 때에는 웃음도 나오고 너그럽습니다. 또한 그런 생활 태도, 그런 마음가짐이 더욱더 내 사업을 잘 되게 합니다. 그러나 주위 환경이 내 뜻과 같지 않을라 치면 우리는 언제 그랬냐는 듯 금방 어두워집니다. 이것이 보통 사람들의 모습일 것입니다. 그렇지만 그런 삶의 태도로는 등 따습고 배부를 때는 모르되 춥고 힘들 때는 밝은 삶을 살기 힘듭니다.

웃음이 나올 만한 처지가 될 때 웃음이 나오는 것은 쉽습니다. 누구나 할 수 있는 일입니다. 그러나 웃음이 가실 때에도 웃음을 잊지 않고 어려운 환경에서도 싫은 마음, 좌절하는 마음을 내지 않아야 내 삶이 희망이 있는 것입니다. 그렇게 살고 그렇게 마음먹는 것은 쉬운 일은 아니지만 우리는 반드시 그렇게 해야 합니다. 그렇게 할 때 비로소 진정한 여유를 가질 수 있고 또한 지금은 비록 힘들지만 그렇게 해야 나중에 웃을 일이 정녕 생기게 되는 것입니다. 그러므로 어두울 때 더욱더 밝은 마음을 내어야 하는 것입니다.

어둠이 온다고 같이 어두워 져서는 아무 것도 할 수 없습니다. 어둠이 오더라도 내가 등불을 키고 집안을 밝혀야 못 다한 일도 마저 할 수 있고 내일의 일도 준비할 수 있는 것처럼, 웃을 일이라곤 하나도 없고 즐거운 일이라고는 눈곱만큼도 없다 하더라도 그럴 때일수록 더더욱 마음의 등불을 키고 우리는 더욱더 밝은 마음을 내어야 합니다. 그래야만 어둠은 사라지며 밝은 내일이 오게 됩니다.

비록 현실이 내 뜻과 같지 않고 아무리 세상이 막막하고 암울하기 그지없다 하더라도, 어둠이 짙어 질수록 우리는 더욱더 밝은 마음으로 우리의 하루 하루를 밝혀 나갈 것입니다.
