[우리 모두의 공업(共業)]

하루 사이에 800 mm가 넘는 비가 쏟아 진 강릉 지방을 비롯하여, 온 나라가 태풍 루사가 가져 온 엄청난 재해에 넋을 잃고 있습니다. 먹을 물조차 없고 매일 라면 하나로 끼니를 떼우는 분들이 수두룩하고, 철도도 도로도 끊어져 지원 물품이 들어 갈 길도 없습니다. 무너진 산하, 날아가 버린 부농의 꿈들, 산더미같은 쓰레기 앞에 사람들은 망연자실합니다. 그야말로 아비규환입니다.

그런데도 정부에서는 제대로 된 지원이 이루어지지 않고 책임을 느낀다거나 국민의 마음을 따뜻하게 해 줄 위로의 한 마디도 아직 없습니다. 생색 나는 말은 안한 적이 없고, 생색내는 곳은 안 다니는 적이 없는 이 나라의 최고 고위층들도 묵묵부답, 그저 아랫 사람들 앞에서 심각한 표정으로 자신의 책임을 다하는 듯 합니다.

죽는 사람은 죽어도 살 사람은 살아야 된다는 말을 증명이나 하듯, 이 와중에도 아파트 값은 천정부지로 솟아, 오르기 전에 산 사람은 몇 천 몇 억의 공돈에 안도하고 판 사람은 자신의 불행(?)에 가족 관계까지 악화되기도 합니다. 그리고 그 대책을 핑계 삼아 사람들은 멀쩡한 푸른 산하를 택지 개발이란 명목으로 또 허물려 합니다.

전기도 수도도 들어오지 않는 곳에서 하루 하루를 망연자실하게 보내는 이가 있는가 하면, 오늘도 백화점 명품 코너는 붐비기만 하며 골프장은 메워지고 주 5 일을 알차게 보내는 각종 아이디어로 사람들은 설레입니다. 틈만 나면 외국 여행이고 군대 가는 사람만 바보며, TV에서는 여전히 웃고 떠들고 사람들은 지역으로 사상으로 갈려 서로를 탓하고 서로를 미워합니다. 이것이 21 세기 오늘의 대한민국 모습이라 한다면, 너무 지나친 말이 될까요?...

오늘의 이 어지러운 모습은, 우리 모두의 공업의 결과입니다. 우리의 이기심, 우리의 무관심이 비를 부르고 태풍을 부르며 우리 모두를 혼돈의 소용돌이에 빠뜨린 것입니다.

비는 그냥 오지 않습니다. 바람도 그냥 불지 않습니다.

겉보기에야 세계적인 기상 이변의 결과이겠지만 그 기상 이변이 우리를 향하게 한 것은 바로 우리가 같이 지은 업의 힘인 것입니다. 밝은 기운이 넘치는 곳은 태양이 빛나고 만물이 그 열매를 익혀 가지만, 어두운 기운이 자라는 곳은 바람과 물이 쓸어 가 버립니다. 진리가 거짓에게 고하는 경고요, 일종의 자정작용(自淨作用)인 셈입니다. 그 자정 작용의 엄청난 고통을, 선량한 우리 이웃들이 대신 짊어진 것입니다.

요 근래에 들어 부쩍 심해진 빈부 격차, 남의 눈치를 보지 않는 가진 자들의 오만, 또한 돈을 벌고 출세하기 위해서는 남의 아픔을 아랑 곳 하지 않는 각종 형태의 부정 부패, 잘못을 인정하지 않고 끝까지 우기며, 남의 탓만 하고 책임지지 않는 뻔뻔함, 곳곳에 넘치는 거짓과 부도덕, 그리고 내 즐거움, 나의 이익만 추구하는 우리 모두의 욕심과 그로 인해 고통 받는 이웃들에 대한 무관심이, 오늘의 이 참담한 재앙으로 나타난 것입니다. 어둡고 어리석은 마음이, 비를 부르고 바람을 불러 온 것입니다.

누가 누구를 탓할 것 없이, 우리 모두의 깊은 참회가 필요할 때로 보입니다...
