만해 한 용운 스님의 유일한 제자로 춘성 스님이란 분이 계십니다. 이 분이 종로 조계사 대웅전에서 장좌불와 수행을 하실 때입니다. 대웅전 기둥에 기대 앉으신 노스님을 어느 젊은 스님이 보니, 양말을 짝재기로 신고 계셨습니다. 그래도 큰스님으로 이름 높으신 춘성 노스님이 젊은 중도 그러지 않는 짝재기 양말을 천연덕스럽게 신고 계시니 한 편으론 이상하고 한 편으론 궁금도 했나 봅니다. 이 스님이 여쭙니다.

이 말에 춘성 노스님은 별 이상한 놈(?) 다 보겠다는 투로 그 젊은 스님을 보시더니 일갈을 하십니다.

이 놈아! (양말을) 제각기 따로 보면 하나도 이상할 것 없다, 괜히 한 묶음으로 보니 이상한 게지... 이 말씀에 젊은 스님은 오히려 자신이 부끄러워 졌다고 합니다.

사물은 어두운 면과 밝은 면, 두 가지를 모두 갖고 있습니다. 어느 것 하나도 100 % 어둡고 100 % 밝은 것은 없습니다. 아무리 어두운 것이라도 어딘가 밝은 곳이 있기 마련입니다. 우리는 언제나 그 어딘가 숨어 있을지 모르는 밝은 면을 찾아 보면 됩니다. 없는 쪽을 보면 한없이 막막하지만, 있는 쪽을 보면 한없이 풍요로운 법입니다.

오늘같이 비오는 날은 장사가 안된다고, 나다니기 불편하다고 한숨 지을 게 아니라, 그동안 까맣게 잊어 버린 나를 찾아 보라고 모처럼 나를 찾아 온 반가운 손님으로 맞으시면 어떨까요?

따스한 커피 한 잔에 비 내리는 창 밖에는, 어쩐지 잊어 버린 첫사랑의 그 님이 저만치서 나를 보고 있지는 않을까요? 꼭 유행가 가사가 아니더라도 내리는 봄비 속에 한없이 추억 여행을 떠나 보는 것도 즐거울 것 같습니다. 그저 세상이 아름답기만 했을 무렵, 이 비 내릴 때쯤이면 길 위로 그려지는 동그라미가 얼마나 신기했습니까? 빨간 우산 노란 우산은 또 얼마나 알록달록 했고요...

어느 때 어디서라도 밝은 면, 밝은 모습을 찾는다면, 세차게 내리는 비바람이 꼭 원망스러운 존재만은 아닐 것입니다.
