저자 _ Master Yeocheon Mubi(무비)

Master Yeocheon Mubi became a monk in 1958 under the tutelage of Master Yeohwan at Beomeo-sa Monastery. He graduated from the Buddhist seminary at Haein-sa Monastery, and resided in meditation retreat at other major monasteries. Considered one of the greatest theologians of his time, succeeding Master Tanheo, he taught as a head lecturer at the seminaries at Tongdo-sa, Beomeo-sa and Eunhae-sa Monasteries, and served as the Director of Dharma Education for the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the Head of Dongkuk Sutra Translation Institute, and the Dean of Chinese Sutra Graduate School at Donghwa-sa Monastery. In May 2018, he ascended to the rank of daejongsa, meaning a great master in the Seon tradition, a title reserved only for eminent monks and nuns of more than forty years of service with impeccable reputations for both learning and practice. He is now teaching the Avatamsaka Sutra to hundreds of monastics and lay people at Munsu Seon Center in Busan, and communicating heart-to-heart with the public through his website ‘Holding Up a Flower’(http://cafe.daum.net/yumhwasil).

Translator Heeyon Hong studied English Literature at Yonsei University and graduated from Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation(GSIT) at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies(HUFS). Translated and interpreted professionally since 1998, she worked as an interpreter for Dharma talks, workshops, retreats, lectures and press conferences for Buddhist and mindfulness teachers including Ajahn Brahm, Ajahn Ganha, Mingyur Rinpoche, Tsoknyi Rinpoche, Dr. Mark Williams, Dr. Chris Germer as well as famous authors such as Yuval Harari, Richard Dawkins and Arianna Huffington.

무비 스님이 가려뽑은 한국불교의 명구 42개

‘팔만사천법문’이라는 말이 있다. 부처님의 일대 교법이 아주 많음을 일컫는 표현이다. 그 방대한 가르침이 이루고 있는 산을 오르려면 우리는 어디서부터 시작해야 하는가, 생각만 해도 막막하기만 하다.

한국불교의 강맥을 잇고 있는 대강백 무비 스님은 경전과 선어록 등에서 불교의 요체를 담아낸 명구를 가려 뽑고 명쾌한 해설을 담아 『무비 스님이 가려 뽑은 명구 100선』(󰡔무비 스님이 가려 뽑은 불교 명구 365󰡕로 재출간)을 선보인 바 있다. 이 책이 많은 이들에게 사랑받을 수 있었던 것은 불교의 수많은 경전과 어록, 선시 등에서 길어 올린 주옥과 같은 문장을 해설과 함께 담아내 독자들로 하여금 쉽고 편한 접근이 가능했기 때문이다.

이 책은 󰡔무비 스님이 가려 뽑은 명구 100선󰡕의 모든 명구 중 한국불교의 사부대중이 사랑하는 경전 명구와 우리 조사 스님들의 명언, 선시 등에서 42개를 다시금 엄선해 하나로 묶은 것이다. 이전의 책에 담긴 명구의 원전이 중국, 한국 등 지역적으로 넓은 무대를 포괄했다면, 이 책은 한국이라는 무대에 집중하여 이른바 ‘한국불교의 명구’를 담아낸 것이다.

한국불교의 명구 속에서 발견한 삶의 지혜

너무나 당연한 이야기이지만 이 책에 담긴 42개 한국불교의 명구는 곧 우리 삶의 지혜나 다름없다. 다시 말해 종교성을 지닌 텍스트이지만 또한 종교성을 초월하므로 신자가 아닌 누가 읽더라도 이 가르침은 유효하다는 것이다.

한 예로 조선시대 청매 인오 선사의 ‘십종무익송’ 중 하나를 들여다보자.

A noble and dignified carriage will bring no benefit,
Unless true virtues lie inside a person.

안으로 실다운 덕이 없으면
밖으로 위의를 세워도 이익이 없다.

內無實德 外儀無益

한 수행자가 있다. 항상 같은 승복만 입어 닳고 닳아 수행이 원만한 것처럼 보이지만, 그의 말과 행동은 그렇지 못하다. 무비 스님은 이를 두고 “개가 코끼리의 가죽을 둘러쓰고 코끼리인 양 위장하는 것” 같다고 말하였다.

하나의 비유로 수행자에 대한 이야기를 했지만 사실 이 가르침은 단순히 출세간에 한정된 것이 아니다. 우리 주위를 둘러보자. 겉과 속이 균형과 조화를 이루지 못해 “꼴불견”인 이들을 얼마나 많이 목격하는가.

이렇듯 이 책의 42개 명구 속에는 당연한 이치이지만 쉽게 잊어 언제 어디서든 스스로 살피고 경계해야 할 삶의 지혜로 가득하다.

영미권 독자들을 위한 한국불교 명구

이 책은 『Korean Buddhism』(2010), 『Encounter with the Beauty of Korean Buddhism』(2014)을 비롯해 매년 한국 불교문화 관련 서적을 번역해 왔던 한국불교종단협의회의 2018년 작품으로, 오랜 시간이 지나도 변치 않는 사랑과 관심을 받고 있는 한국불교의 명구를 영미권 독자들에게 소개하고자 기획되었다.

이 책의 특징을 몇 가지 소개하자면, 먼저 한국적이고도 따뜻한 느낌의 일러스트를 다수 삽입한 점을 들 수 있다. 명구와 해설 사이사이에 꽃과 나무, 새와 곤충을 콘셉트로 한 일러스트를 배치함으로서 국내외 독자들에게 보는 즐거움을 제공하고자 노력하였다.

더불어 이전의 다른 프로젝트와는 달리 영문과 한글을 교차 편집하여 영미권 독자들은 물론 국내 독자들도 읽을 수 있는 책으로 출간하였다.

한편 이 책의 번역을 맡은 홍희연은 한국불교에 대한 깊은 관심으로 불교계에서 오랜 시간동안 번역과 통역을 맡아 온 베테랑이다. 이번 프로젝트의 경우 명구의 선정과 구성 등에도 참여하면서 한국불교에 대한 애정을 여실히 담아냈다.

많은 이들의 노력으로 출간된 이 한 권의 책이 영미권 독자들로 하여금 한국불교에 대한 더욱 큰 관심을 불러일으키고, 또한 한국불교를 이해하는 데에도 큰 도움이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.

마지막으로 영미권 독자들을 위한 책 소개를 번역가의 서문으로 갈음한다.

Intuitive understanding and heart-felt experience of emptiness is one of the most marvelous gifts someone can share with humanity. There have been great beings throughout history whose existence alone, by simply being who they are, reverberates and awakes in people around them a fervent wish and aspiration to be just like them. The words of these great sages, mahasiddhas, who have become emptiness itself often transcend time and space and have the same impact hundreds, or even thousands, of years afterward; and countries, or even continents, apart.

Yet, constrained and ignorant as we are, we need special guides who share the same time and space with us to journey through the pages of Dharma. Many Koreans find such a guide in Master Mubi, who has successfully and eloquently bridged the gap between modern, colloquial Korean and the scholarly Chinese of old times in which the verses were first composed.

By translating a collection of his essays into English, I am simply following his path, though slipping and stumbling in my footsteps. However, I would have been utterly lost and completely misled without the orientation provided by Dr. A. Charles Muller, Dr. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. and other authors of the series Collected Work of Korean Buddhism, who knew “better than to meander,” for they understood their “footsteps will serve as wayposts for those who follow” them.
